Google Ads for plumbers.

Short version: Google Ads work for a plumber because the customer with water coming through the ceiling searches for help there and then. The price depends on the job, not the trade: "emergency plumber" averaged £22.57 a click in UK keyword data pulled August 2026, 2.8 times "plumber near me" at £8.00, and bathroom searches cost less again. So run emergency, leaks, boilers and bathrooms as separate campaigns with separate budgets.

Three things set plumbers apart from most trades. You can use Google's Local Services Ads as well as Search, but Google's screening for them does not check Gas Safe. Boiler ads carry a legal line, because only a registered business may claim gas work. And the biggest searches near yours belong to plumbing merchants and DIYers, not customers.

What a click costs

Leaks and emergencies are dear. Bathrooms are cheap.

Google's Keyword Planner, UK, pulled October 2026. These are the top-of-page bid ranges the planner gives, low to high, which is what it estimates you need to appear above the free results:

SearchJobSearches a monthTop-of-page bid

bathroom installers near meBathrooms2,900£1.78 to £8.95
bathroom fitter near meBathrooms3,600£1.69 to £7.29

The top of the leak detection range, £37.98, is 5.2 times the top of the bathroom fitter range, £7.29. One campaign with every plumbing search in it lets Google spend the budget wherever it likes; separate campaigns let you bid hard on the jobs that pay and cheaply on the rest. "plumber near me" has by far the most searches but says nothing about the job, so it suits a general campaign with a modest bid.

On cost per lead: a different pull of UK keyword data (August 2026) put the average click on "emergency plumber" at £22.57 and on "plumber near me" at £8.00. At 7.33%, a US benchmark for home-services search ads and the only published one we have, that works out at roughly £308 and £109 a lead. Your own figure depends on your website and whether you answer; for the full working, see how much to spend on Google Ads and are Google Ads worth it.

Local Services Ads or Search

You get two ad types. Locksmiths get one.

Plumbers is one of Google's UK Local Services Ads categories, and so is HVAC (heating or air conditioning). Locksmiths are not on the list, which is why Google Ads for locksmiths is a Search-only story. For a plumber the two work differently:

Local Services AdsSearch ads
How you payPer valid lead: a call you answer, or a missed call in your opening hours where the caller holds on for more than 20 secondsPer click, and a tap on the call button costs the same as a headline click
What Google checksA business check, public liability insurance and a business licence where local law requires one; a verified Business Profile; 3 to 4 weeks on averageGoogle's ad policies, misrepresentation included, and advertiser verification as it rolls out
What you controlYour category, the areas you choose, your operating hours and an average weekly budgetEvery search you bid on, every word of the ad, the website it lands on
Bad leadsAutomated lead credits are not available to advertisers in EMEAYou pay for the click either way; negatives stop you paying for the wrong searches

Local Services Ads charge per lead, missed calls held past 20 seconds included, which suits a plumber who picks up. Search gives you the job types and the words, which suits a plumber who wants boiler installs and not dripping taps. You can run both. The badge is now Google Verified, the old Google Guaranteed badge and its money-back guarantee are gone, and you may still read otherwise in guides that have not caught up. The detail is in Google Local Services Ads.

Boiler ads carry a legal line

Gas Safe belongs in the ad.

Google's UK screening list for plumbers names a business check, public liability insurance and a business licence where local law requires one. It describes plumbers as people who "may also service gas", but it names no Gas Safe check. So the badge does not tell a customer you are allowed near their boiler. Your ad and your website have to, and the rules cut both ways:

RuleWhat it saysWhat it means for your ads
Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998Only a business in the HSE-approved class may do gas work, and no one may falsely pretend to be in itRegistered: say so. Not registered: no boiler or gas searches in the account
Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers ActBans displaying a trust mark without authorisation, or claiming an approval you do not have (Trading Standards guidance)Use the Gas Safe logo and number only if they are yours
Google's misrepresentation policyBans offering services you cannot deliver, "including not having the right licences or qualifications"An unregistered business advertising boiler repair is breaking Google's rules as well as the law

It is not a paper risk. In July 2026 a gas fitter prosecuted by the HSE, who had advertised on social media and with flyers faking the Gas Safe logo, was given eight months suspended for two years at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court. The Gas Safe Register is the only gas engineer registration scheme the HSE approves, and registered engineers carry an ID card listing the appliances they are qualified to work on, which a customer can check.

If you are registered, it is an edge most ads waste. Put it in a headline, put the number on the website in plain text, and bid on the way customers search for it, including the old scheme's name, which people still type (Keyword Planner, UK, October 2026):

SearchSearches a monthTop-of-page bid
corgi registered gas engineers near me880£1.30 to £4.49
gas safe plumbers near me590£1.53 to £8.99

"corgi registered gas engineers near me" is searched more often than "gas safe plumbers near me", and the ad answering it should say Gas Safe registered, because that is the register that counts. The rest of the Gas Safe and water regulations picture is in plumbing leads. Read it as an outline of the rules rather than legal advice.

When to spend

Boiler budgets belong in autumn.

UK searches for "boiler repair near me" peaked at 14,800 in October and fell to 2,900 a month over the summer (Google Ads keyword data, pulled September 2026; the tool rounds volumes into bands). A boiler campaign at the same budget all year overspends for thin pickings in summer and runs out when the heating goes back on.

Move the money with the season by changing the budget, not the schedule. Google paces a campaign towards 30.4 times its average daily budget a month however many days or hours it runs, so cutting hours alone does not cut spend. Keep emergency and leak work on its own campaign and budget, so a boiler cut in summer never starves the burst pipe calls.

The settings that matter

Set it up for the burst pipe call.

SettingWhat Google saysFor a plumber
Location optionBy default Google counts people in your area and people showing interest in it; Presence limits it to people who are therePresence. A leak is fixed where the customer lives
RadiusThe smallest radius allowed is 1 km; go too tight and the ads may barely runThe area you can reach fast for emergencies; wider for bathrooms
Call button scheduleThe call asset can be limited to the days and hours you take callsNo number on show while you are under a sink and nobody covers the phone
Smart BiddingAutomated bidding sets its own bids by hour, but it will not run outside the schedule you setUse the schedule to switch off the hours you cannot cover
Call trackingA Google forwarding number records connected calls, duration and the caller's number for calls over 15 seconds; a call can count as a conversion by lengthSet the minimum call length so a wrong number is not counted as a job
Call-only adsNo new ones since February 2026; existing ones stop showing in February 2027Use a normal search ad with a call asset instead

The account setup itself is covered in how to set up Google Ads, and the wider trade picture in Google Ads for tradesmen.

Stop paying for these

The merchants are the big leak.

Searches that contain "plumbing" or "plumber" but come from someone buying a part, fixing it themselves or looking for someone else (Keyword Planner, UK, October 2026):

SearchWho is searchingSearches a month
city plumbing near meMerchant14,800

worsley plumbMerchant8,100

checkatrade plumbersDirectory2,400

Add the merchant, retailer and directory names as negatives, plus "how to" and "best way to" for DIY, water company names, and any job you do not do. Negatives that apply to every trade are listed in why Google Ads are not working. Then answer every call the ads produce: a missed call on a burst pipe is a paid click for a job the next plumber gets, which is what call answering services deal with.

The bigger picture

Your ads, your account, your calls.

A boiler lead bought from a lead site can be sold to more than one firm. Your own ads, landing on your own website with your own number, mean the caller is yours and nobody else gets the job details. When we run Google Ads for a trade, it is in the trade's own Google Ads account, in their name, paid to Google on their own card, and the account and its history stay with them if they leave.

Straight answers

Questions plumbers actually ask.

Are Google Ads worth it for a plumber?
They can be, because a burst pipe or a dead boiler sends people straight to Google. But the emergency auction is dear: "emergency plumber" averaged £22.57 a click in UK keyword data pulled August 2026, against £8.00 for "plumber near me". Run them if you answer every call, split emergency, boiler and bathroom work into separate campaigns, and count calls as conversions so you can see what each job costs.
How much does a plumber pay per click in the UK?
It depends on the job. In Google's Keyword Planner for the UK (October 2026), the top-of-page bid for "emergency plumber" ran £3.86 to £26.33 and "leak detection specialist" £4.58 to £37.98, while "bathroom fitter near me" ran £1.69 to £7.29. Those are bid ranges, not what you end up paying on average, which depends on your own account.
Can plumbers use Google Local Services Ads in the UK?
Yes. Plumbers is one of Google's UK Local Services Ads categories, and so is HVAC (heating or air conditioning). Google screens a plumber for a business check, public liability insurance and a business licence where local law requires one, needs a verified Business Profile, and says screening takes 3 to 4 weeks on average. You pay per valid lead rather than per click.
Does Google check Gas Safe for Local Services Ads?
Google's UK screening list for plumbers names a business check, public liability insurance and a business licence where local law requires one. It does not name Gas Safe or any other gas check. So the Google Verified badge on its own does not tell a customer you are registered to work on their boiler; your ad and website have to.
Can I advertise boiler work if I am not Gas Safe registered?
No. In Great Britain only a Gas Safe registered business may lawfully do domestic gas work, and the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 also make it an offence to falsely pretend to be registered. Google's ad policy separately bans offering services you cannot deliver, including without the right licences or qualifications. Keep boiler and gas searches out of your account until you are registered. That is the law in outline, not advice on your registration.
What negative keywords should a plumber use?
Start with the merchants and retailers: "city plumbing near me" alone is searched around 14,800 times a month in the UK, more than "emergency plumber" itself. Then add DIY how-to searches, directory names such as Checkatrade, and water company names, plus any job you do not do.
